Word Music Day
Christchurch's ONLY event for Make Music Day 2024 !!
Guess who did it?
The world celebrates World Music Day, also known as 'Fête de la Musique', every year on June 21 to promote music across the world.
People go outside on the streets and public spaces like parks, playground, neighbour plaza's to play music.
Music for everyone. We shouldn't just be observers, but we should be participants.
HOW DID THIS DAY COME ABOUT?
I had the idea of creating something in the community music while researching for my University assignment. As you may or not be aware, I am enrolled at UC (University of Canterbury's Music Department) and part of my degree is taking a course called Community Music. I stumbled upon this World Music Day and it talked about June 21 as the day for everyone to make music.
HOW DID THE DAY GO?
I will begin by saying that it was the most fantastical day ever!!
My vision of getting people to come and play music with us was fulfilled! The sun was shining after a week of rain...
When we were setting up. a woman came up to us and told us that she was looking for music on World Music Day. She said that she was from France, and that in France everyone gets out in their neighbourhood and plays music. And she found US !!!
"The 2022 Music Festival marks the 40th anniversary of this international event. Initiated in 1982 by Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, to bring the 5 million amateur musicians in France to perform in public at that time, it took off, becoming an essential event in French cultural life." Taken from here
How lucky we were to have an extra set of hands to play ukulele while I was very terrible on guitar. Of course, people were curious and I invited them to play the shaker, or the drum, tambourine, or guitar... and we got a guitar player !!
A little girl played the drum, and when I was delegated to the tamborine, I felt that it was my instruments. Hey, I play African Drums, and I keep the beat with my bass... so it came naturally.
Then, our puppeteer came and he danced to our music while mouthing the words...
This was truely a POP UP MUSIC day.
A couple of people said that we made their day!! It certainly made mine!
Thanks to my friend Moira Hofsteede, and Del and Lisa from France for making my dream of just setting up shop, play music, invite people, and just play.
Of course, next year will be bigger, more people, more organised, and hey, maybe I can funding for some simple instruments that people can play.
Do you want to join the community music journey!!
