Pattern System for
the Bass Player Practice
Celebrating the receipt of my book!
I thought that I'd showcase the instruments that I have with the receipt of my book because as Bono said: I haven't found what I was looking for.... until I found the bass.
My dog Max, is always appreciating my effort. Wouldn't be the same in my music room without him.
I'll have to get rid of some guitars to make room for my pattern posters PS. They aren't my guitars so I can bin 'em! :)
If you have The Pattern System for the Bass Player by Ariane Cap with Wolf Wein, this page will make sense for you :) This is a new book and a new way of understanding your fretboard.
The fretboard is divided into 5 sections (in her book), and each section has a way of playing each scale, modes with a unique way of fingering in order to stay in the section. Once you understand where the notes are, and how they are put together, then you learn how to play the 3 note grouping, 4 note-grouping with scalar studies, learn the major and minor triads all over each section, playing in the diatonic cycle, moving shapes with diminished triads, playing arpeggios over two octaves, pentatonic scales and there is plenty of Groove Practice, Musical Practice, Improve Practice.
Let's say it is an intense study of the fretboard, of the bass, of fingering, of mental exercise, of grooving... by the end of the book (which I'm far from achieving), your bass knowledge would surpass many many musicians understanding.
By hey, you don't need to know that much of the fretboard to play beautifully, amazingly, in time with the right groove.... but I want to know how music works, I want to know how to play like those musicians up on stage. I might never get there, but the journey is fantastic!
Seriously, you will ask yourself "What the heck is she practicing", "that's not the right fingering' so this page is for the people who are studying with Ariane and need to watch someone struggle with note naming, grooving, 3 note grouping, the works. Warts and all!

Practicing Gmaj over F# dim
This was sort-of my invention of an exercise. Ari said that these two chords went well together, so I decided to learn the patterns together.

Mixed motion and saying scale degrees.

Using the pattern system, I'm playing over these chords. My suggestion to myself is to smooth the notes together. I need to work on this

Major Triads - Diatonic Cycle in Area 1
This is area 1 of the pattern book. This is a video for my teacher to review. I did make a mistake. This was August 2022. I watch it today Feb '23 and I'm not sure if I could do this now.. eiks!
Saying scale degrees in C Major
This isn't as easy as it looks. But it is so very very helpful to know the intervals.
My recommendation to myself is to SING the intervals next time...
More to come..
